Does lyme disease cause long term damage even after treated for dogs? My dog was diagnosed with lyme disease today and is receiving a month's dose of doxycycline for treatment. My question is whether or not his joints/muscles will suffer permanent damage from contracting the disease at all even after treatment is complete. He is 3 years old, the symptoms started Sunday and treatment began today (Tuesday)...not sure if the timing would make a difference in the permanence of damage. Does anybody have experience with long term results of lyme disease in their dogs? Please help me, I'm confused by this disease. Thanks

♥Love is a Border Collie Rescue♥ replied: "Dogs should begin to show signs of recovery two to three days after beginning treatment. However, the disease may recur within a few weeks or months; in these cases, the dog will need to return to antibiotic therapy for extended periods. Lyme disease can be a multi-systemic illness, with signs that may include fever, swollen lymph nodes, lameness, loss of appetite, heart disease, inflamed joints, and kidney disease. Disorders of the nervous system, while uncommon, may occur as well. So, be alert for signs of the disease returning, and be prepared to treat it again, and possibly again... The sad part is there is a vaccine for the prevention of Lyme disease. Quick removal of a tick also will help prevent Lyme disease because the tick must remain attached to the dog’s body for one to two days before the disease can be transmitted. Consult with a veterinarian about the different tick prevention products that are available, as they can be an effective way to prevent the disease. Quick Edit: I know a good dozen dogs from my Yahoo! Group who are Lyme Disease positive. They live very happy, active, healthy lives, just stay vigilant, don't worry too much, but be prepared for repeat treatment, okay? You and your pup will be just fine."

gentleannie replied: "Just like peope they never get rid of the disease, the med's should stop the symptoms, but you should get the shot every year because they can get reinfected, my Lab was rescued 2 yrs ago, my greyhounds have always gotten the vaccine, well the Lab tested positive, no symptoms so we get the shots ever year and I keep an ey on her for symptoms, because she can still get them, but she's doing great she over 10 and still runs (lumbers like a bear actually 97lbs) so far so good"

Deb C replied: "It all depends on how strong his immune system is and how long he was infected before the symptoms became prevalent to you. The real long term damage can be with the internal organs. Lyme disease if left untreated can affect the kidneys terribly as well as other internal organs."

ragapple replied: "I tink the jury is still out and it may well be individual - IE: some recover fully - some not. I know of a dog took the WORLD agility gold after lyme treatment and some with big coursing & other preformance wins -- but also some who were never quite right again.... and sadly some who died (but they all had major kidney damage BEFORE treatment)....."

Does lyme disease ever go away in dogs...? Hi, For about the past 6 months I have been waiting until graduation to adopt a dog from an animal shelter. I am 1 week away from graduating, and I have found a dog that I really like at a local shelter. The only problem with the dog is that the shelter says when it came in as a stray, it had a limp. When they took it in to the vet, it tested positive for lyme disease. The shelter said that the dog is on Doxycycline ( I think thats the name) and that he acts like a crazy, healthy, and happy dog. The woman at the shelter said that he has to go back to the vet in 6 months to get retested, but most of the time dogs with lyme disease end up getting rid of it in the long run.. I looked into the price of the pills and it said that I can buy 500 pills for 30 dollars online...what I want to know is about what percent of the time does a dog get rid of the lyme disease, and what percentage of the time would a dog have to live on antibiotics for the rest of its life? I really want this dog, i would just rather the dog go somewhere where it can definitely live happy and pain free instead of me worrying about the missing a dose and a dog being in pain.

DaveSFV replied: "Lyme disease is difficult to treat but in most cases it can be cured. Takes time."

john ross replied: "Here is a site with some pretty good info on lyme disease. It does state that there is a better chance of a "cure" if treatment is started early. Since the dog was a stray, no one knows when he contracted the disease. You just have to do what is best for you and the dog. good luck."
